A glimmer of hope
Chapter 128:A glimmer of hope
"Not there, Captain," Jason said, immediately negated Matt's plan. "You know, from here to Homestead, the middle is to pass through the whole town."
“What about?”Matt asked.
“There are zombies everywhere in the city, and if our motorcade is trapped inside, there’s only one way to die,” Jason said gravely.
"Excuse me, you're making excuses for your cowardice," Matt was a little excited after seeing his plan negated, "can you sit by and watch our attendant's illness get worse?"
"My responsibilities include the safety of all the people here," Jason said. "It's not just the crew chief."
“In any case, I have to choose the safest direction for our team.”Jason continued, "I hope you understand."
“Is there no other way?”Matt was still a little reluctant, and he begged, "Think about it, Major."
“It seems so,” Jason said somewhat helplessly, sighing and looking out at the rain that was going on outside.
"If not, we'll go back to the base," Matt made a final struggle, Jennifer and she worked together for many years, the relationship between the two is very good, he can't bear to watch Jennifer fall on the road.
“Matt, I can accept that the trip was a little delayed, but I can’t let the action go back to success,” Jason said to Matt cordially.
"Then you need to come up with an idea, Major," Matt's voice suddenly raised, and Jason's words turned his mood from disappointment to anxiety, and turned a little angry, "don't you say you're responsible to everyone?"Jennifer is one of them all."
Matt’s voice alarmed the others nearby, and some of the people closest to him began to cast a surprised look toward them.
"Whatever we're going to do next, we have to wait for the rain to stop," Jason said. "In this weather, I don't think our team can go far."
“The plan was yours, and the date of your departure was chosen,” Matt lowered his voice, but still struggled to hide his anger.
Matt turned away and left Jason alone.
“Major, what happened to him?”After Matt was gone, Dr. Mario came along, and he looked at Jason in silence.
"Matt, worried about Jennifer's condition, asked us to return to the base," Jason spread, "the matter is not as simple as he thought, know that the bow has not turned back the arrow."
“They fly in the sky most of the time, and they don’t know what’s on the ground,” Dr. Mario said. “It’s me or Martin, who is sick at the moment, and I’m not going to go back to base, and Martin is not going to do that.”
“You look a lot further than Matt,” Jason pulled out his cigarette case and put a cigarette in his mouth. “Our way out will only be in Fort Myers, or we’ll be stuck in Florida.”
“And Fort Myers has to have a boat,” Dr. Mario laughed and looked at Jason.
“If there’s a boat, everyone can escape,” Jason lit the smoke with a lighter and took a sip, “do, what should we do if we don’t find the boat in Fort Myers?”
"I don't know," said Dr. Mario, "but there must be a way before the car gets to the mountain."
"Well," said Jason, with a helpless look, "do you've been here when you were young, and do you know anything about the infrastructure of Everglades?"
“For example, there are hospitals in this area.”When Jason thought that when Dr. came to him to discuss the plan of action, he mentioned his own experience here when he was young.
"It's been a long time, I was here to do research work, it's desolate, the conditions are very tough."Dr. Mario recalled and shook his head.
"But you can ask the others," Dr. Mario said, "especially for people who spend a lot of time in Florida, and they'll probably have what you want to know."
"Good idea, Doctor," Jason nodded, "and when I've finished smoking this cigarette, I'll go and ask everyone else."
"Well, then I'll go and rest for a while, and it seems that the rain won't stop for a while," said Dr. Mario, "you should have no plans to go in the rain?"
"The rain stops and we'll go, and you'll rest, Doctor."Jason lost the cigarette in his hand to the rain curtain, and the cigarette butts fell on the ground outside in the standing water, making a slightly unheard of "z" sound, and the flame of the cigarette butt was immediately extinguished by the rain.
"Mario, the captain seems to have had an argument with the major," Dr. Mario said, as soon as he returned to his seat, Dr. Martin asked him.
"Nothing big," said Dr. Mario, squinting, as he stared at the fire in front of him. "Mr. Captain is worried about Jennifer's condition, and Jason needs to return to the base with everyone."
“Is he crazy?”Dr. Martin put down the skewer in his hand and stared at Mario’s side, “Didn’t the major promise him?”
"Jason is a good officer," Dr. Mario said. "His big picture is much higher than the captain."
"Then I'll be relieved," Dr. Martin breathed, and she took a sip of coffee and continued, "There seems to be no sign of Jennifer getting better, is there any good way?"
"If the medicine does not work, it is only infusion treatment, but we do not have the infusion equipment now," Dr. Mario suddenly raised his head and looked at the others by the fire, "who of you are more familiar with the Everglades, is there a hospital near here?" 」
“The hospital?”Kim thought, "The nearest hospital is probably the city hospital in Homestead."
Is there any other hospital?Jason just asked me this, but the last time I was here was decades ago."Dr. Mario said, "It was desolate here at the time, and we had only crocodiles to be with us."
“There is another, but a little far away,” King said, “there is a hospital in the Flamingo Visitor Center, and it is the only hospital in the entire Everglades, which is dedicated to tourists and has relatively complete medical equipment.”
“How far away?”Dr. Martin asked.
“Thirty miles, (about 50 kilometers),” King estimated in his heart, “the Flamingo Visitor Center is almost the southernmost point of the Everglades, and it’s right at the end of Route 9336.”
“Yes?”It seems that I am going to talk to Jason at once," Dr. Mario stood up, and he beckoned to Kim. "Go with me, introduce the Major to the flamingos Visitor Center, and see how he plans it."
“I’d love to help you,” King stood up and went to Jason behind Dr. Mario.
“I’m going too,” Hill said, coming to Jason, and Hill hastened to follow.
"Major, I've brought you here, and she's got the information you want," Dr. Mario found Jason and brought Kim and Hill behind him. "Oh, no, it's two people coming with you."
“Hill, Kim?”Jason saw the doctor who was going to go back to rest and folded back again, knowing that he should have had new news. But Jason was surprised to see the two girls brought with him.
Hill beckoned to Jason and spitted his little tongue.
“Jin knows where there’s a hospital in the Everglades Park,” Dr. Mario said of Kim. “You have to ask her for details.”
“Tell me what you know,” Jason was so excited that he and his doctor had just mentioned the hospital and didn’t expect the doctor to find someone to know about the situation immediately.
"Yes, Major," nodded King, "the hospital in Homestead is the nearest to us, but it is the city."
“Well, the hospital there, I know, was that it was because it was in the city that I gave up on my intention to go there,” Jason motioned to King to continue.
“The other is the only hospital in the Everglades Park,” Kim said. “It’s at the Flamingo Visitor Center in the southernmost part of the Everglades, and if we’re going there, we just have to follow Route 9336.”
Jason took a map and pointed to a location above and asked, “Is it here?”
"Yes, I've been there before," said King, pointing to the location on the map. "Here's the entrance to the river flowing into Florida Bay, and there's a large camp on its left."
“What about the hospital?”Jason continued to ask.
"Very good, ordinary surgery can be done."Kim recalled carefully, “There is also a small marina at the Flamingo Visitor Center.”
“Really?”When Jason heard the words "pier", his eyes lit up, "Is there a lot of boats on the dock?"
"There are many tourists," King saw Jason's expression, knew what he was thinking, and quickly explained: "but the boat is not large, the number of people is very small, and the river within the river is the main."
Jason was a little disappointed if there were enough ships to go out to sea at the Flamingo Visitor Center, because they were going to Fort Myers to the North, and it would be far more dangerous than ten times as much as going to the Flamingo Visitor Center.
But when you think about it, Jason is also relieved that the largest port in southwest Florida from their base is Fort Myers, and the small flamingo Visitor Center is just a tourist area, where it is almost impossible to find large ships that can go to sea.
